چکیده

Compact groups (CGs) of galaxies offer an exceptional laboratory for the study of dense galaxian environments — where interactions, tidally induced activity, and mergers are expected to be at their highest rate of occurrence. Here, we present first results from a new catalogue of compact groups, one based upon the Las Campanas Redshift Survey (LCRS). Using the equivalent width of [O II] λ 3727, we have studied the star formation activity in LCRS CGs: we find strong evidence of depressed star formation in CGs relative to that in loose groups or the field. Although much of this effect can be ascribed to morphological mix (CGs contain a high fraction of early-type galaxies), there is some evidence that the star formation rate in late-type galaxies is particularly deficient — perhaps only one-half to one-third that of field spirals. We conclude that gas stripping mechanisms may play a role in CG environments. Las Campanas Loose Groups in the Supercluster-Void Network

We study the spatial distribution of loose groups from the Las Campanas Redshift Survey, comparing it with the supercluster-void network delineated by rich clusters of galaxies. We use density fields and the friends-of-friends (FoF) algorithm to identify the members of superclusters of Abell clusters among the Las Campanas loose groups. We find that systems of loose groups tend to be oriented p...

Radio continuum observations are a probe of star formation in galaxies, and are unaffected by dust extinction. Observations of the distant rich cluster Cl 0939+4713 have detected radio galaxies classified as post-starburst (“k+a”) on the basis of their optical spectra, and presumably this situation arises from heavily dust-obscured star formation (Smail et al. 1999). We present the results of a...

Las Campanas Redshift Survey Results: the 3d Power Spectrumand the Luminosity Function

Some recent results on the galaxy 3D power spectrum and the luminosity function derived from the Las Campanas Redshift Survey (LCRS) are discussed. We will present the LCRS power spectrum, compare it against results from other local redshift surveys, and use it to constrain a number of cold dark matter structure formation models. Then we will proceed to describe the LCRS luminosity function, as...

The Influence of Environment on the Star Formation Rates of Galaxies

We have used a sample of 15749 galaxies taken from the Las Campanas Redshift Survey (Shectman et al. 1996) to investigate the effects of environment on the rate of star formation in galaxies. For each galaxy we derive a measure of star formation rate (SFR) based on the strength of the [OII] emission line, and a measure of galactic structure based on the central concentration of the galaxy light...
